£1billion in the Budget to Tackle Child Poverty

End Child PovertyThe Campaign to End Child Poverty with Andrew Gwynne, Labour MP for Denton and Reddish, have welcomed the Budget 2008 as a signal of the Government’s continuing commitment to ending child poverty.

Director Hilary Fisher said:

“In such a tight spending round, is it is reassuring to see the government is still serious about lifting children out of poverty. We are hopeful that our heightened campaigning and the Government’s renewed focus on children and families are starting to get results.”

“The Chancellor boldly set out the Government’s intention to end child poverty with investments of nearly £1 billion through increasing child benefit and child tax credits.”

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“The measures announced yesterday by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, will make a real difference to the lives of 250,000 children across the country currently living in poverty.”

“With nearly 1 billion in the budget the Government has shown its determination to help the 3.8 million children being held back by poverty in the UK today. This extra money will make a huge difference to children in Tameside and Stockport currently living below the poverty line.”

Andrew Gwynne MP will work with the Campaign to End Child Poverty to encourage the government to continue to work towards its pledge of halving child poverty by 2010.
